Michael Palace and Rob Braswell formed the musical group 10010010 to explore generative

music. With their unique background in music and science they have begun to chart new

territory in music involving stochastic properties and genetic algorithms.

Palace releases electronic music compositions under the name horchata. His music focuses

on four major elements: complex beat music, dark ambient soundscapes, programmed

compositional glitch music, and field recordings. Often a composition will include several of

these elements. Palace has worked for a number of years as a research scientist at the

University of New Hampshire's Complex System Research Center. His work there

focuses on necromass or dead wood in Amazonia. During his numerous field visits to the

rainforest, he has recorded sounds using various microphones and minidisk recorders.

Modification of many computer simulations have yielded some interesting sound generating

and compositional programs which are featured in newer recordings by Palace.

Braswell has been involved with many bands from rock music to experimental electronic. He

has over 20 years experience in programming in C, Fortran, Perl, MATLAB, IDL, R, shell

scripts, and DHTML. Science topics explored by Braswell include global and regional climate

change; ecosystem biogeochemistry. His mathematical abilities prove vital in 10010010’s

efforts to develop a generative music program.

the wave - 01 is a program that generates *.wav files.

the program uses 6 oscillators that can be set to any frequency.

each sound can have various harmonic frequencies calculated as well.

noise, ringmodulation (2), and filters (up, down,

resonance, and random) are all part of the program.
